On Tuesday morning, Georgina took Bert for his usual morning walk, leaving Colin in peace to catch up with paperwork at her kitchen table. Colin emailed the sketches to his team and asked them to add them to Ryan Everett’s file as a possible likeness of someone who might have known where he was.

Georgina wasn’t back by the time he left to see Sally at the Feathers, so he left her a note propped against the kettle, set the alarm and locked the back door.

Sally answered his knock at the back door of the pub. ‘Hello, Colin. I wasn’t expecting to see you. Is something wrong?’

‘Can we have a quick word, please?’ he asked.

‘Of course,’ she said. ‘Come in. Can I get you a cup of tea or anything?’

He smiled. ‘Thanks for the offer, but I’m fine.’

‘Vicky’s not here – she’s taken Robbie to see his other grandparents, and Ben’s at the wholesalers,’ she said.

If his theory about the sketch being Sally’s brother was right, Ben – who’d also grown up in Summerstrand – would have recognised him, too. But Colin would work with what he had. ‘You’re the one I was looking to talk to, actually,’ he said with a smile.

‘Is it to do with Manson?’ she asked.

‘No. It’s about a cold case,’ he said. There wasn’t a way of preparing her for this. ‘Do you recognise this man?’ He showed her the sketch Georgina had printed out for him.

‘No,’ she said.

She said it a little too quickly for Colin’s liking, and he noticed that she wouldn’t meet his eyes.

‘Sorry I can’t be of any help,’ she said brightly.

It was pointless leaving a copy of the picture with her and asking if Ben would mind taking a look when he came home. Ben, wanting to look out for his wife and worried about the significance of the sketch, would no doubt claim he had no idea who the likeness was, either. No. Colin needed to find someone else who might recognise Martin. Maybe Frank, the history teacher Georgina had talked to at the George and Dragon, would be able to confirm the identity of the man in the sketch.

‘Thanks for your time,’ he said, and climbed back in his car, ready to drive to Norwich.
